Can Serum Lactate Dehydrogenase Levels be used as a Diagnostic Tool for Hemolytic Hyperbilirubinemia in Neonates?

Background & Objective: Neonatal jaundice is common reason for admission in neonatal units requiring further evaluation to prevent adverse neurodevelopmental outcome. Lactate dehydrogenase levels are high hemolysis. This study was aimed explore the diagnostic properties of Dehydrogenase (LDH)in hemolytic causes hyperbilirubinemia. Methods: In this observational cross sectional study, prospective data collected at Neonatology department The Children’s Hospital and University Child Health, Lahore fromFebruary 2020 March 2022. A total 364 neonates with diagnosis indirect hyperbilirubinemia were enrolled through convenient sampling method after excluding comorbidities sick neonates.The categorized into non-hemolytic group lactate compared both group. Data analyzed using SPSS version 24 Results: Out babies, 123 (33.79%) diagnosed as having while 241 (66.21%) fell newborns group, LDH 101 (82.1%) raised only 124 (51.5%) (241) had (p-value <0.001). Sensitivity Specificity marker hemolysis 82.11% 48.55% positive predictive value negative 44.89% 84.17% respectively. practical implication that there insufficient test s clinical usage cal reliability make Conclusion: an effective tool a higher sensitivity value.
